Customised Hand Splint Fabrication

Hand Therapy Associates offers custom made thermoplastic hand splints in Singapore. Customised splints are thermoplastic supports used to facilitate healing after an upper limb (fingers, hand, and wrist) injury and/ or surgery. There are different types of splints provided at Hand Therapy Associates, and they will be offered based on the patient’s condition, needs, and the area(s) where splinting is required.

Finger-based Splint

Hand-based Splint

Forearm-based Splint

There are sub-types to each of these splints which will be customised and molded based on the specific needs of any given condition.

Our team of  hand therapists are experienced and skilled in fabricating custom-made hand splints best suited for any particular condition. Each splint is molded to fit any given area to meet specific needs and at the same time, try to prevent limiting the range of motion of other unaffected areas. They also tend to be less bulky compared with, for e.g. casts, as thermoplastic splints can be adjusted for a comfortable fit.

Most of the time, custom made thermoplastic splints are fabricated during the acute phase when swelling may be present. The unique properties of  thermoplastics  allow splints to be remolded or adjusted, thus eliminating the need to fabricate a new splint when swelling subsides.

Uses & The Different Types of Thermoplastic Splints

Thermoplastic splinting is an excellent way to restrict movement of or immobilise painful joints, muscles, tendons and/or ligaments while allowing unaffected joints to move. Hand splints are effective in speeding up the hand's recovery, managing pain in the hand, improving functional use, and rebalancing the hand.

Splinting does not only provide stability, but it is also effective in aiding functional use. For example, a hand-writing splint can be fabricated to assist proper pen grip patterns for people who have difficulties holding a pen because of traumatic injury or a neurological condition. In addition, splinting can help increase pain-free range of motion in a stiff joint. For example, a belly gutter splint can be used to increase extension (straightening) range of motion of a finger’s proximal interphalangeal joint (pipj), and it may be adjusted progressively to optimise the extension motion.

Thermoplastic hand splints are also suitable for patients undergoing hand therapy to help maintain range of movement in affected areas and to optimise treatment effectiveness.

Who Needs a Custom Made Thermoplastic Hand Splint

Custom Made Thermoplastic Splints are perfect for certain conditions which require partial or complete rest of the tendons, ligaments, joints, muscles, or connective tissue around the hand. Some of these conditions require individuals to wear the hand splint over an extended period, especially for conditions where the surgery option is not chosen or unsuitable.
